On Elemental

Having played a low level Elemental Shaman but nothing above level 40, we made a decision to give a try with Elemental. We would like to have the option to respec for DPS for questing, grinding, farming and even leveling in Wrath of the Lich King.
It is for sure that Enhancement is the popular DPS spec and it is indeed fun, effective and efficient. However, it requires and entirely different set of gear than a Restoration build, which is hard on the bank space.
As usual, switching between Restoration and Elemental is very easier on the wardrobe than Restoration and Enhancement, because an Elemental build can share some Restoration gear if necessary now that +heal includes some +spell damage. What is more, a Restoration specced shaman will usually want to carry at least a few pieces of Elemental gear for those occasions when you need to crank out the DPS but don't have the opportunity to respec. It would be space efficient to stick with just Restoration and Elemental gear, and leave Enhancement out of the mix.
Probably you have a pretty decent set of Elemental gear with several useful blues and purples acquired from quests and instances. Your only sets of caster boots are his Earthbreaker's Greaves with Vitality enchant and Primal Surge Bracers and Gladiator's Salvation, both with healing enchants, are adequate though less than ideal for DPS duty. As a matter of fact you have about 600 spell damage and 17% spell crit unbuffed.
We have tried a few different Elemental builds and settled on this one for now.
Two talents require special comment. First of all, we originally skipped Totem of Wrath in favor of Nature's Swiftness, since Totem of Wrath is primarily recommended as a group buff. However, we found out that when nuking mobs at range, they would usually die very shortly after coming within range of any of my fire totems, making the standard fire totems not very useful. So we made a decision to give Totem of Wrath a try, and the 3% +hit and +crit make a noticeable difference. For Player vs. Player, we can see that Nature's Swiftness would be preferable, but for solo Play vs. Environment, we prefer to the totem.
The other unusual choice is Eye of the Storm. The research has shown that this talent is not highly recommended. However, we discover that if nukes don't quite kill a mob before it reaches us, this talent will often let us cast another quick nuke when engaged in melee.
Probably it is worth nothing that we did not take Elemental Precision, which is a staple of most endgame Elemental builds. At this time we do not expect to raid with this spec, and therefore do not necessarily need as much +hit. If we ever were invited to raid as Elemental, we could switch Eye of the Storm to Elemental Precision.
It is undeniable that Elemental is quite fun through spending a few hours with this experiment. Soloing as Restoration is about absorbing punishment and grinding down your opponent slow and predictable. Elemental and Enhancement are both about big, spiky, unpredictable damage which can be a lot more exciting. Even with the modest gear, we can take 50% of the health off a typical level 70 mob if we get a Lightning Bolt crit plus Lightning Overload.
